LETTER PROTESTING

The Harassment And Oppression Aimed At

The UBCV Through The Case Of Giac Hoa Temple – Saigon

To: Chairman of the People’s Committee of 7th Ward, Binh Thanh District, Saigon

Your Honor,

We have been informed of an awful news that on March 24, 2012, the People’s Committee of the 7th Ward, Binh Thanh District, Saigon, had authorized the Decision number 53/QD-UBND ordering monks from Giac Hoa Temple to undo the renovation of the temple’s roof within 3 days or risk having electricity and water cut off and demolition of the roof by the government.

Giac Hoa Temple, located a 15/7 No Trang Long Street, Binh Thanh District, Saigon, is the office of the UBCV’s Executive Office. The Most Venerable Thich Vien Dinh is the Temple’s Abbott and is also the new President of the UBCV’s Executive Office.

This awful news has caused the entire UBCV Representatives Committee and monastic members in the province of Thua Thien, Hue a feeling of utmost resentment towards the flagrant, unkind, and inhumane action against the UBCV by all levels of the government .

We wholly denounce this flagrant action of religious discrimination nature against Giac Hoa Temple.

We ask that the People’s Committee of the 7th Ward, Binh Thanh District, Saigon, recall the Decision number 53/QD-UBND, signed on March 24, 2012 by Mr. Chairman Ho Ky Lan, so that Giac Hoa Temple can proceed with the renovation of the roof to stop rain water from leaking into the temple.

It is not advised to destroy temples or praying halls, sacred places of worship supported by Dharma protecting heavenly deities. The terrible karmas of such crime will be inherited by your future generations, as they will have to pay for the karmas caused by their parents’ actions in the present. The Buddha taught that “Before committing any action, think about their consequences.”

We sincerely wish Mr. Chairman and your members good health.

Hue. March 27, 2012

On Behalf of the Representative Committee

The Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam at

Thua Thien Hue Province

Chief Representative
