Attorney Cu Huy Ha Vu is a patriot who sued Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and the Communist Government of Vietnam for allowing China to mine bauxite in Central Highland; for destroying Vong Canh Hill in Hue. Attorney Cu Huy Ha Vu also petitioned for the elimination of Article #4 in the Constitution, for multi-party government, and against China invading Southeast Sea, and so on.

In 2010, Cu Huy Ha Vu was imprisoned by the Vietnamese government with the alleged crime of “advocating against the government”.

In 2011, the Fifth Patriarch, The Most Senior Venerable Thich Quang Do voiced his protest against the illegal sentence against attorney Cu Huy Ha Vu. The Venerable stated:

“We request that the Communist Party and the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam immediately release Dr Cu Huy Ha Vu, for he has committed no crime; that the Court declares to invalidate the sentence on April 4. 2011 so that it can start from the beginning, as the Court had violated the proceedings according to the criminal decree.”

“Stating that Dr. Cu Huy Ha Vu is innocent is based on vigorous protest from national and international public in the past 48 hours through communication agencies worldwide. Even more clearly, in reality, Mr. Cu Huy Ha Vu only used the very laws of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to peacefully support victims of land grabs, to peacefully request for democracy as per the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights that Vietnam signed in 1982. Additionally, Mr. Cu Huy Ha Vu also alarmed the dangers of a Chinese invasion as well as grave environmental perils in allowing China to mine bauxite in Central Highland.”

Attorney Cu Huy Ha Vu has been subject to maltreatment in prison, and he has started a hunger strike to protest it. It has been 3 weeks, and his conditions are very grave.

As prisoners, we all have experienced abuses and violation of human rights in Vietnamese prisons.

In light of Dr. Cu Huy Ha Vu’s life being threatened, the UBCV requests that:

  • The government of Vietnam urgently finds a solution according to the allegations against wardens at the prison where Dr. Cu Huy Ha vu is being held.
  • Let attorney Nguyen Thi Duong Ha and Dr. Cu Huy Ha Vu’s family members visit him in prison to protect his life.
  • International human rights organizations raise their voice to save attorney Cu Huy Ha Vu’s life.

May the people of Vietnam have all human rights as per the United Nation’s Constitution, like people in other civilized societies in the world.
